Final Collection

My final graduation collection titled 'Unsane' was inspired through the research of bondage and corsetry. I researched what exactly bondage is so I can thoroughly understand it, and then I looked at bondage in fashion. Bondage has been the main source of inspiration for hundreds of fashion designers in the past and continues to today. Bondage is achieved though leather straps, harnesses, buckles, and ropes. It is about expressing yourself and being daring enough to take risks. I see it as a real way to show off the beauty of the female form, while celebrating femininity and female empowerment. Whilst corsetry was originally designed to restrict women and has overtime become a symbol of oppression. I see it to empower and celebrate women and a. way that they can explore their sexuality.

Bondage and corsetry are all about feeling trapped, suffocated, or tied down. It’s like wearing a huge cage on your body and you can’t escape which brings me into my secondary research. I have explored mental health and the way that we all currently feel in the world today. We’ve all gone a little bit insane in my opinion or at least experienced some sort of pain and torment. I have investigated ideas of isolation, feeling trapped and restricted with no way to escape. Ideas of mental health and insanity, unease, and discomfort. An unstable mental health and the feeling of the unknown. Anyone can be driven mad and almost everyone has experienced at least one symptom of mental illness. We are becoming accustomed to being alone, isolation and loss of interest.

Whilst these emotions are real and are becoming more and more common today. I want to empower women to feel strong, confident, and powerful in my designs. Allowing women to feel sensual and express themselves the way they want to. To escape their paranoia, insanity, and unstable mental health. I want the wearer of my garments to be able to wear their pain on the outside of their bodies and free ourselves of the insanity.
